It's not always a question of finding the ideal time to work out. Most people don't always have the choice - they work out around their work schedules, family time and leisure activities. But not every time of day is ideal for doing sport and you should read these tips before you start.

First, you should know that the body has cycles during the day that are based on our lifestyles. When you work out depends on your daily cycle - and it's important to respect it. You should plan your sporting activities around these cycles so you don't upset your natural rhythms and to maximise your performances.

So, the best time to work out really depends on you, because we all have different rhythms. There's no ideal moment during which your body is more capable of doing sport. However, depending on your goals, there are a few tips to follow to optimise your workout. Everyone has their own opinion, but we've listed the most common ones here.

Tips to follow

Depending on your goals, the best time to work out might vary. Keep in mind that the body's temperature varies during the day. It is lowest at 3 am and highest in the late afternoon around 5 pm. It's been shown that the higher your body temperature, the better your physical performances. In this case, you could say the best time to work out is late afternoon.

However, if you want to lose weight, it's best to work out in the morning, before breakfast, after having a beverage. This way you'll burn fat from the start of your workout. You should not do any more than 30 to 45 minutes of exercise.

There are also times during which it's not recommended you do sport. For example, you should avoid working out if you haven't eaten for several hours. If you find yourself in this situation, have a small carbohydrate-rich snack before your workout. You should also avoid doing sport on a full stomach, as the digestive process requires a lot of energy. However, full digestion takes about 15 hours, so you only need to wait about two to three hours after a meal.

Finally, if you have trouble sleeping, be sure to not work out too hard after 7 pm because you could upset your body's temperature curve.

Listen to your body

Of course, these tips are just a guideline. You should always listen to your inner clock to know the best time for you to do sport. Something that works for someone else may not be right for you. To know when your body is most ready to do sport, experiment a little to find the rhythm that works for you.

The most important thing is to work out regularly to feel good - both physically and mentally!
